Bangladesh: The halt came as a 120-feet-deep hole developed along the lone channel that was operative for the ferry service

Munshiganj, Oct 16 (bdnews24.com)—Ferry service on the Mawa-Kawrakandi route resumed Tuesday afternoon after a disruption of about seven hours due to river erosion.

The service resumed from Terminal No. 3 at 4pm after completion of emergency repair work there, Sirajul Haque, Manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Mawa ferry terminal, told bdnews24.com.

Following erosion at the Mawa terminal, ferry services on the Mawa-Kawrakandi route came to a total halt at 9am on Tuesday. The BIWTC authorities started repairing work at the terminal soon after.

The halt came as a 120-feet-deep hole developed along the lone channel that was operative for the ferry service. The hole was formed as the land beneath the terminal caved in due to strong current and continuous erosion.

Meanwhile, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan instructed on Monday to introduce three new terminals as ferry communication at the Mawa point was facing danger due to the erosion and strong current.

On Oct 9, the Terminal No. 2 was closed due to erosion. After five days, the Terminal No. 1 also met similar fate. Work to prepare the Terminal No. 4 as an alternative was underway when cracks surfaced in it.

Under these circumstances, the BIWTC tried to keep Terminal No. 3 operational. Vehicle owners were asked on Sunday night to use Paturia terminal as an alternative way to cross the Padma river.

On Monday, only a handful of vehicles crossed the river using the Mawa terminal and the slow process of crossing resulted in a huge gridlock on both sides.
